PostSubject: Tar Hollow State Park/ S.E. Ohio UPDATE: 2010   Wed 17 Nov 2010, 9:58 am

Well it has certainly been awhile since I have updated anything about Tar Hollow, or really anyother area. Mainly because of being busy at work, but I did get into the Southeast part of Ohio's Public Hunting areas and Tar Hollow was part of that trip for 2 days ( last weekend 11/13 - 11/14).

Saturday 11.13.10 was a real nice and eventful day,...My son and I got there kinda late, and since I hadn't been there for awhile, I had to get reacquainted with the park again.
We saw a few nice deer on the way in off Rt 327,..and we even had a Coyote run out in front of us as we were driving down the road, and he stayed in front of us for a good 1/8th of a mile,..then he darted off to the left and stopped next to a tree ,we stopped and watched him for a few then I started Howling, and yelping and he looked at us at if saying " What the ? " lol. Then he walked away.

Then we drove a little farther, and a BIG Doe was standing on the side of the road, and I started baby talking her LOL ! We will leave it at that.
As we drove around a little more we saw more deer and alot of squirrels running around. We pulled over and after about 2 minutes after parking 3 squirrels came running by us and playing around, chasing each other. My son took off after them, and flanked them,..he ended up getting 1 of the 3,...then it was like BAM it got HOT !!! So we hunted as long as I could lol, and we took off.

SORRY PIC is SO DARK and sideways

We drove through the Mead Paper Public Hunting Area, Or The Experimental Forest we didn't see anything but bow hunters, and campers, and dust from the road we were on. Saw alot of trails, and we got out and looked over some of them and found some nice deer signs, and paths.

After 2 hours of driving and scouting this area out, we left kinda disappointed, that we didnt even see a squirrel.

We drove by old Mead Paper on Rt 35 and Higby, and saw alot of hunters parked there, but we didn't stop to check it out.

SUNDAY 11.14.10 We went back to Tar Hollow this time with my youngest son with us (14yrs old), the weather was lousy, but cool out, and since the night before was wet, the leaves were soft and quiet to walk on.
This time I knew where we were going and we go there early. As the day became a little brighter, hunting time was on,..I went to a spot I had picked out on Saturday, and not even 3 minutes after I got into the woods, I shot a squirrel. To make a short story shorter, after another 2 hours we left due to not seeing anything, weather just wasn't helping.

My squirrel

I did notice the following, accorns galore, and other nuts. ALL OVER THE PLACE !!! So I see deer and squirrels really being good in the woods this year when the crops are all down, and or covered in snow. I have noticed more deer in the woods this year compared to the past 2 years due to HIGH WINDS damaging the nut crops, and this year is TOTALLY the oppisite, there are plenty of nuts laying on the ground and alot of deer signs at every place we stopped at. So the outlook on this years deer gun season and deer season over all looks to be a BOOMER one.

Make sure you and your hunting party scout out the area you plan to hunt, make sure you arrive early, and ALWAYS remember WEAR YOUR ORANGE !!!!!!!!!! You can never wear too much ORANGE !!!

I take Orange with me when I bow hunt too.

SAFETY is the first thought and should be the first action and practiced ALL the time in or out of the woods, field, water etc.

I want to wish everyone luck on their harvest, and as always,..
